Almost every mark was put there by cleaning
The fine web of scratches visible on a dark car in direct sun has a boring cause: something abrasive was dragged across the panel. Not a stone, not the weather — a mitt, a brush or a towel carrying grit that was on the car a moment earlier. The same is true of most of the marks people assume are wear.
That makes exterior care mostly a question of sequence. Wheels before paint, because brake dust is metallic. Rinse before contact, because dry dust is sandpaper. Two buckets rather than one, so the grit ends up somewhere other than back on the car. Dry it rather than letting it dry, because the minerals in the water are what etch the surface.
The rest is knowing which defects are in the clear coat and which have gone through it, because that single distinction decides whether a problem is a polish, a respray or something to live with.
