Pet hair, stains and odors: what comes out

Three of the most common reasons people finally book a detail, and the three most misunderstood.

These three are what finally makes people book. They are also the three where the internet gives the worst advice, because most of it treats the symptom and makes the underlying problem harder to fix.

Pet hair

A vacuum does not remove pet hair because pet hair is not sitting on the fabric. Dog and cat hair has a scaled surface and, helped by static, it works down between the fibers and anchors there. Suction pulls at the end that is free and leaves the end that is hooked.

What works is mechanical: something with grip dragged across the weave in one direction to pull the hair back out, and only then suction to collect it.

Rubber and silicone tools
A rubber blade or a pumice-style block grips hair and rolls it up into lines you can lift off. Slow, methodical, one direction at a time — this is the part that takes the hour.
Compressed air on the seams
Hair collects along stitch lines, under seat rails and in the gap between cushion and backrest. Air blows it into the open where it can be collected.
A light mist of water
Breaking the static lets the hair release instead of clinging to the tool, the seat and the person removing it.

What reduces it long term: a fitted cargo liner or a seat cover for the area the dog actually uses, and brushing the animal somewhere other than the car. Neither is exciting and both work better than anything applied afterward.

Spills and stains

Almost everything about a stain is decided in the first ten minutes, by the person nearest to it, before any detailer sees it.

Blot, do not rub
Rubbing drives the liquid deeper into the foam and frays the fiber face, which leaves a permanent dull patch even after the color goes.
Work from the outside in
Starting at the edge stops a small mark becoming a large halo.
Cold water, not hot
Heat sets protein stains — milk, blood, most food. Cold is slower and it does not lock anything in.
Skip the household spray
Most contain optical brighteners or high-alkaline detergent. On automotive fabric they leave a ring that is lighter than the surrounding material, and that ring is harder to fix than the original spill.

A stain that has been left, dried, and re-wetted a few times has usually migrated into the foam, and the only method that removes it is hot water extraction — inject, agitate, immediately pull back out. That is the difference between a standard interior clean and a deep interior clean.

What will not come out, however it is treated: dye transfer from denim into light leather or vinyl, a bleach mark, most ink, and anything where the material itself has lost color. Those are missing pigment rather than added soil, and no cleaner puts pigment back.

Odors

An odor is a source. It is not a smell hanging in the air, which is why the products sold to fix it — hanging trees, fogging sprays, scent bombs — reliably fail. They add a second smell on top of the first, and after a week you have the original back with a note of cherry.

Removing an odor means finding what is producing it and taking it out.

  1. Find it. Usually carpet under a mat, the foam of one seat, the cabin air filter, or spilled liquid that ran into the seat rail channel
  2. Remove it. Extraction for material; replacement for a filter that has gone; dismantling a small amount of trim if a liquid has run somewhere it can be reached
  3. Neutralize what is left. An enzyme treatment on organic sources, given time to work rather than wiped off
  4. Dry it completely. Damp material in a closed car regrows the problem within days
  5. Only then treat the air path, including the evaporator housing, if the smell is coming through the vents
Smoke
The hardest, because tar has coated every surface including the headliner and the inside of the vents. It usually improves greatly and is rarely eliminated entirely on a vehicle smoked in for years.
Milk or food
Highly responsive to extraction plus an enzyme, as long as it is reached before it has cycled through several warm days.
Mildew
Means water is getting in. A blocked sunroof drain or a failed door seal will bring the smell back a month after it is cleaned, so the leak is the actual repair.
Pet
Usually responds well once the hair is out and the carpet has been extracted, because the two sources are the same material.

Cleaning leather car seats properly

Almost every car seat sold as leather is a coated surface, and that single fact changes the entire method. Here is how to clean it without taking the finish with you.
